Amazon Recruitment Bursary (Software Development Engineer)

Launched by the Amazon Development Centre in 2018, this bursary aims to support talented South African students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. The programme offers comprehensive bursary funding and a summer internship, where students are assessed for a permanent Software Development Engineer (SDE) role after graduation.
What the Bursary Covers
The bursary provides capped funding for:
- Tuition fees
- Accommodation (on-campus or private)
- Monthly living allowance
- Books and stationery
- Transport
- A personal laptop
Who Should Apply
The bursary is open to current undergraduate students who meet the following criteria:
- South African citizenship
- Studying towards a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Software Engineering
- Specialisations in Machine Learning or Artificial Intelligence are also eligible
- Will be in the final year of a three-year degree or third year of a four-year degree in 2026
- Planning to pursue Honours studies in 2027 (NQF Level 8)
- Not currently studying at Master’s level
- Achieving an average of 65% or higher
- Enrolled at a South African university
- Willing to complete a paid internship with Amazon during the summer vacation
- Open to accepting a full-time permanent role at Amazon starting January 2028, if offered
Software Development Engineer (SDE) Internship
Successful bursary recipients will complete a paid internship during their summer vacation. Interns work on meaningful, real-world projects in areas such as:
- Distributed systems
- Data mining
- Security
- Automation and scalability
During this period, students will receive technical training, collaborate with Amazon engineers, and be assessed for a potential full-time Software Development Engineer role.
Obligations
To qualify for full bursary funding, recipients must:
- Complete the Amazon internship
- Be open to a permanent SDE role at Amazon for a period equal to the years of bursary received
- Successfully complete their undergraduate and Honours studies by 2027
How to Apply
- Applications open on 1 May. Submissions will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
- All applications must be completed online via StudyTrust’s application platform. Shortlisted applicants will undergo further assessment with Amazon.
- Applications will only be considered from South African citizens who meet all eligibility criteria.
