Pikitup General Worker
Pikitup, the waste management company serving the City of Johannesburg, is inviting applications for 150 General Worker positions within its Operations Department. The successful candidates will carry out cleaning and refuse bin delivery-related duties at various depots. Responsibilities may include street cleaning, litter picking, refuse collection, emptying bins, loading refuse bags onto waste trucks and delivering replacement bins.

Minimum Requirements
To qualify for these Pikitup General Worker vacancies, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Grade 10 qualification.
- At least 12 months’ proven experience in waste management as a general worker.
- No criminal record.
- Must be physically and mentally fit.
- Must be a South African citizen.
Important: Preference will be given to applicants residing within the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. Applicants must provide proof of residence or a letter showing their residential address.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidates will perform cleaning, waste collection and refuse bin delivery-related duties.
Cleaning and Waste Collection
- Attend dress parades for inspection of personal protective gear and equipment.
- Sign attendance registers.
- Collect all materials and equipment required for daily duties.
- Perform litter picking, street sweeping and area cleaning.
- Clean developed areas, informal settlements and open spaces.
- Place filled refuse bags at the kerbside or designated refuse collection areas.
- Collect waste from streets, kerbsides, designated drop-off sites and open spaces.
- Empty bins and load refuse bags onto waste trucks or bakkies.
- Clear spills after emptying bins or when refuse bags break.
Refuse Bin Delivery
- Load new and replacement bins from central stores.
- Load bins onto delivery trucks.
- Check refuse bins for damage before leaving central stores.
Safety and General Duties
- Follow safety precautions when collecting refuse bags from kerbsides and pavements.
- Report safety incidents, equipment problems and injuries to the Team Leader and Operations Supervisor.
- Ensure daily tasks are completed.
- Follow safety and operational procedures.
- Wear protective clothing at all times.
- Perform other duties assigned by the Team Leader, Supervisor or Operations Manager.
Required Knowledge and Competencies

- Knowledge of relevant waste management tools and equipment.
- Understanding of waste management procedures.
- Knowledge of relevant company procedures.
- Ability to follow instructions.
- Ability to prioritise and complete assigned tasks.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
