Gardener

Introduction

Rand Water is seeking a dedicated Gardener to join the Environmental Management Services (EMS) team. The successful candidate will help maintain and enhance the landscapes and facilities in Vereeniging, using horticultural equipment and tools in a physically demanding work environment. This role is integral to ensuring that grounds and landscapes are well-maintained, clean, and visually appealing, contributing to the organization’s environmental and aesthetic standards.

Minimum Requirements

• Education: Grade 12 (Standard 10) or equivalent.
• Experience: At least six months of relevant experience in garden or nursery work.
• Skills: Ability to operate horticultural machinery, such as brush cutters, clearing saws, and lawnmowers.
• Safety Awareness: Basic understanding of safety protocols required for handling machinery and chemicals.

Primary Duties

1. Grounds Maintenance: Responsible for maintaining lawns, including mowing, trimming, and edging.
2. Plant Care:
   • Perform regular cleaning, sweeping, weeding, and watering of plants and flowerbeds.
   • Apply fertilizers, compost, and chemicals according to specified instructions.
3. Debris Removal: Collect and dispose of garden waste and other debris, ensuring cleanliness and order.
4. Machinery Operation:
   • Use and maintain specialized horticultural tools and machinery, including hand-held blowers, lawnmowers, and brush cutters.
5. Additional Support: Assist with decorations, landscaping projects, and minor construction work as needed.

Knowledge

• Equipment Operation: Familiarity with brush cutters, push-type lawnmowers, garden tools, and other horticultural machinery.
• Basic Plant Knowledge: Understanding of common garden plants and basic horticultural care.

Skills

• Horticultural Abilities: Ability to perform basic gardening and landscape maintenance tasks efficiently.
• Machinery Proficiency: Skilled in handling and maintaining horticultural equipment.
• Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot and address minor issues with equipment or in the garden environment.
• Communication: Basic verbal and written communication skills to understand instructions and convey necessary information.
