SPAR South Africa is seeking a Salaries Controller to join its team based in Jet Park, Johannesburg. The successful candidate will be responsible for the accurate processing, reconciliation, and management of payroll for Corporate Stores. This role is ideal for experienced payroll professionals with strong knowledge of payroll legislation, VIP Premier, statutory compliance, and payroll reporting. The position requires a high level of accuracy, confidentiality, and the ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be expected to:

  • Process payroll information to ensure employees are paid accurately and on time.
  • Review payroll documentation for completeness and compliance.
  • Conduct final payroll runs and generate payroll reports and payslips.
  • Perform payroll backups for weekly and monthly payroll cycles.
  • Manage employee leave processing, monitoring, and reporting.
  • Process staff expense claims and EFT payments.
  • Load EFT files for salary payments.
  • Maintain payroll databases by capturing new employees, terminations, transfers, and employee updates.
  • Handle payroll-related queries and distribute payslips.
  • Process annual salary increases and bonuses in accordance with legislation and collective agreements.
  • Submit monthly statutory returns, including UIF submissions.
  • Prepare and submit EMP201 returns via SARS eFiling.
  • Assist with EMP501 reconciliations.
  • Manage annual COID (WCA) returns and payments.
  • Prepare month-end and mid-month payroll reports.
  • Prepare schedules and reports for third-party payments such as pension funds, provident funds, unions, and garnishee orders.
  • Maintain records of all payroll-related transactions and payments.
  • Administer statutory deductions and employee benefits.
  • Liaise with retirement fund and medical aid administrators.
  • Manage pension and provident fund administration, including new memberships, retirements, withdrawals, and death claims.
  • Prepare salary-related journals and general ledger reconciliations.
  • Maintain payroll records and supporting documentation for audit purposes.
  • Perform additional payroll and administrative duties as required.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • Matric or equivalent qualification.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in payroll administration.
  • Full knowledge and practical experience of the VIP Premier System.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Good understanding of payroll principles and payroll administration practices.
  • Working knowledge of South African employee tax legislation.
  • Strong literacy and numerical skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and data security.

Advantageous Requirements

The following will be advantageous:

  • Accounting background.
  • Relevant tertiary qualification.
  • Experience working with Sage People.
  • Knowledge of the ESS Leave Management System.
