The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is seeking a Housekeeping Supervisor (Waste Management) for Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Rondebosch. The successful candidate will supervise waste management operations within the hospital, ensuring that waste collection, segregation, storage, and disposal processes comply with healthcare regulations, infection prevention standards, and occupational health and safety requirements. This role involves supervising waste management personnel, overseeing service providers, maintaining operational records, and ensuring efficient waste management service delivery across the hospital.

Salary: R201 093 – R236 877 per annum plus benefits

Key Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be expected to:

  • Supervise the AZ Level Waste Management Disposal Area
  • Ensure safe, efficient, and compliant waste handling practices
  • Oversee the collection, segregation, storage, and disposal of healthcare risk waste
  • Manage general waste and recycling operations
  • Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control standards
  • Supervise and support waste management staff
  • Ensure adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Promote safe working practices within the unit
  • Manage service provider contracts and Service Level Agreements (SLAs)
  • Monitor contractor performance and compliance requirements
  • Conduct routine inspections of waste handling areas and equipment
  • Ensure adequate supply and maintenance of waste management equipment and PPE
  • Maintain accurate records of waste volumes, incidents, and operational activities
  • Compile operational reports and support administrative functions within the unit
  • Assist in ensuring effective and efficient service delivery

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • General Education and Training Certificate (GETC) / Grade 9 (Standard 7)
  • Appropriate waste management experience within a hospital environment

Knowledge and Skills Required

Candidates should possess:

  • Knowledge of healthcare waste management regulations
  • Understanding of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards
  • Supervisory and leadership skills
  • Administrative and record-keeping abilities
  • Ability to work effectively within a team
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to maintain professional relationships with staff, patients, and members of the public
  • Strong communication skills
  • Understanding of infection prevention and control practices
