The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness is seeking a Porter to join Gugulethu Community Health Centre. The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe transportation of patients, specimens, medical equipment, and deceased persons within the facility while maintaining a safe, hygienic, and efficient working environment. This position requires a physically fit individual who can work under pressure and is willing to work shifts, weekends, public holidays, and overtime when required.

Key Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be expected to:

  • Deliver specimens to laboratories
  • Ensure a safe and hygienic working environment
  • Check and replace gas cylinders in wards, oxygen banks, and treatment areas
  • Assist with the movement of medical equipment
  • Accompany ambulatory patients within the facility
  • Transport patients using wheelchairs and trolleys
  • Assist with loading and unloading patients from ambulances and vehicles
  • Transport deceased persons from wards to the mortuary
  • Maintain mortuary registers and perform related mortuary duties
  • Ensure the cleanliness of wheelchairs, trolleys, and work areas
  • Report defects on wheelchairs, trolleys, and equipment to supervisors
  • Respond to transport requests from wards and clinics

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • Basic numeracy skills
  • Basic literacy skills

Experience Requirements

The following will be advantageous:

  • Appropriate Porter experience in a public health facility

  • Knowledge of infection prevention and control practices

Physical and Operational Requirements

Applicants must be willing and able to:

  • Work shifts, including night shifts
  • Work weekends and public holidays
  • Work overtime when required
  • Handle deceased bodies
  • Lift and move patients safely
  • Lift corpses onto and from beds, trolleys, vehicles, and wheelchairs
  • Move heavy medical equipment
  • Cover shifts during the absence of colleagues
  • Maintain sober habits

Salary and Benefits

Salary: R144 024 – R169 656 per annum

In addition to the annual salary, successful candidates will receive:

  • 13th cheque
  • Employer pension fund contribution
  • Housing allowance/subsidy
  • Medical aid allowance
